What Do You and a $20 Bill Have in Common?
I found this in a job group posting and wanted to share it -
Sometimes we just need to be reminded! A well-known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20.00 bill.
In the room of 200, he asked, “Who would like this $20 bill?” Hands started going up. He said, “I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this.
He proceeded to crumple up the $20 dollar bill. He then asked, “Who still wants it?” Still the hands were up in the air. Well, he replied, “What if I do this?” And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty. “Now, who still wants it?” Still the hands went into the air.
The speaker then said “My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20.
Well, I’ve thought about that a lot lately and it seems to me that during a career change or a job transition we are a lot like that $20.00 bill.
Many times in the process, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the way we are treated and the circumstances that come our way. We start to feel as though we are worthless or that our value may be decreasing. It is easy to get discouraged and feel crumpled and dirty and just plain tired. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still a professional; your skills and experience are still valid and somewhere is a company or an opportunity that you ARE the best fit for.
This is a difficult, demoralizing process and it’s hard to keep doing it day after day but we have to keep in mind that THIS TOO WILL PASS. How you respond to this challenge is a true measure of yourself, your worth, your dignity and your self-respect so reach out, help others and make it a learning experience.
AND never, ever let it decrease your value! Pass this on to other job seekers and friends who may be feeling a bit crumpled….
Hope you get something out of that!
To your success,
