Surviving the phone screen - Cell phone advice for your job search
It’s amazing how many job seekers make it as easy as possible for recruiters to screen them out by not doing a few simple things. There is an interesting article here, to which I’d like to add a couple of things. 1) If you’re in the midst of a job search, ALWAYS answer your phone, unless of course you’re in the middle of an interview. It may very well be a recruiter calling with a quick question, and if you don’t answer, no matter how professional your outgoing message sounds, they may not leave a message - they might just move on to the next candidate. Recruiters, particularly the very good ones, are usually very busy and may not have time to play phone tag. 2) If you’re in a noisy environment, politely excuse yourself and move to a quiet area where you can at least get the name & phone number of the person who is calling, and set up a time to call them back, or better yet talk to them on the spot. Don’t try to shout over a bunch of noise or background music. Ask the caller to hold for a moment, then put your thumb over the microphone while you walk to quiet area.
